The gadget world is full of surprises. A couple of days ago, Gigabyte Technology introduce a new product line that is dubbed as ‘BRIX’. It looks like that the company recognizes the rising popularity of set-top boxes and HTPC that they’re willing to take chances. By unleashing the Gigabyte BRIX to the computing world, the computer components manufacturing company will be competing with the likes of Apple TV, Raspberry Pi, G-Box Midnight MX2, Intel’s own HTPC products and other set-top boxes and mini-PC already in the market.
About the size of your palm, Gigabyte BRIX is not your average mini-PC nor a set-top box built only for specific functions. This mini-PC with a dimension of 29.9 x 107.6 x 114.4 mm is highly customizable that can function as a full desktop computer or an entertainment device or whatever you have in your geeky mind. Specifically, BRIX can be referred to as a flexible DIY compact PC allowing you to choose from a set of configurations that will suit your needs. BRIX is configurable allowing you to choose between three different Ivy Bridge Cores combining it with your own choosing of RAM size and SSD storage capacity. The list includes Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, up to 16GB SO-DIMM DDR3 memory and whatever the size of SSD you want for your setup.
Though it is not clearly stated whether BRIX is repairable or not, being a DIY kit will give us a hint that its components are replaceable. That is, if one of the components (that we mention above) gets busted, you can easily replace that defective part without throwing away the whole unit in the garbage.
Gigabyte BRIX is also built with style and quality in mind enclosing the whole unit in an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface. It also comes with a VESA bracket that you can use to mount your mini-HTPC behind your HDTV display. Other features includes an integrated Intel GPU, Gigabit Ethernet port, HDMI, 2 x USB 3.0, Wi-Fi, mini display port, half-size mini PCIE slot(already occupied by Wi-Fi) and an mSATA slot for expansion purposes. With dual display functionality, you can use BRIX to control two displays simultaneously.
Gigabyte BRIX can be installed with almost any type of operating system available but make sure that it supports all the hardware components that we mentioned above. But nonetheless, DIYers will surely love the idea of a customizable mini-PC that gives them the freedom to push a device’s capability to its limits.
Gigabyte seems to be quite ambitious with BRIX, aren’t they? But given that they’re one of the leading computer components manufacturers in the world, I believe that they are in the position to conquer this computing domain.
What do you think of Gigabyte BRIX that can unseat your set-top box or HTPC at home? Can Gigabyte succeed in the mini-PC and entertainment sector or set a new trend? Let us know what you think by posting your comments below.
