Do you ever dream of playing your favorite games in such a way that you’re actually ‘in’ the game? I’m not talking about watching 3D movies on your HDTV or playing 3D video games. What I’m talking about is a game experience that is somehow similar to what Keanu Reeves a.k.a Neo experiences each time he enters the world of the Matrix in the ‘The Matrix’ movie series. Oculus Rift – a virtual reality heads-up display that is a product of the imaginary mind of a passionate gamer that goes by name of Palmer Luckey.
Palmer Luckey is the founder of Oculus the maker of the Rift – a high-end virtual reality heads-up display that is expected to change the way we play our favorites games according to some of the gaming industry experts.
Palmer Luckey always wanted to push and bring gaming to the next level that he wanted to be like the movie characters in the Matrix movie wherein you can actually be in the game. With this idea he searched for virtual reality headset in the market to satisfy his craving, but unfortunately he found nothing. This is when Palmer Luckey began to design and develop his own version of virtual reality headset that is affordable for every gamer to buy.
Unlike the costly and much heavier conventional virtual reality headset available from the market, the Oculus Rift is designed to outperform them all. The Oculus Rift was made up of very small, high density and very light weight display. These materials including the sensors that track your head position is very low cost that gives every gamer the rare chance of enjoying a more immersive game than ever before.
The Rift enhances your gaming experience offering Oculus only features such as immersive stereoscopic 3D rendering, massive field of view (110 degrees wider than conventional VR headset that can offer only 40 degrees) and several input ports like DVI/HDMI and USB. Additionally the best about the Rift that makes it ideal for gaming is that it has a very low latency head-tracking that can follow your view without significant delay.
The Oculus Rift was a Kickstarter project similar to BladePad for iPhone that we featured earlier. This project has a total pledge of $1,186,077 surpassing its original target of $250,000 coming from 4,861 backers.
You might think that this project is just a fad from the gaming community, but it is not. The Oculus Rift already has the support of the best game developers in the gaming industry with the likes of John Carmack (lead programmer for Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein 3D) and Gabe Newell president and owner of Valve.
- “What I’ve got now, is, I honestly think the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen” - John Carmack, id Software
- “It looks incredibly exciting, if anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that Palmer’s going to do it. So we’d strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter.” - Gabe Newell, President and Owner Valve
- “I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to program with it and see what we can do.” - Michael Abrash, Valve
- “Needless to say, I’m a believer… We’re extremely excited here at Epic Games to get the Unreal Engine integrated with Oculus” - Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director Epic Games
- “I think this will be the coolest way to experience games in the future. Simply that… that big” - David Helgason, CEO Unity
I noticed that there’s no way for you to use the keyboard and mouse during the game while using the Oculus Rift. But I guess that they will provide some sort of a replacement to these devices by a separate hand gloves or via gestures found on Xbox Kinect or via voice command found on smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S III.
I believe in this project and I’m getting really excited in the development of the Rift. I wish that it will be made available soon for every gamer in the world to buy. What do you think of this virtual reality headset from Oculus? Do you believe that it will be a game changer that will shape a whole new world for the gaming industry?
