Nissan Unveils World’s First Self-Healing iPhone Case

Jan 18, 2012

Last Monday, Nissan has announced the Scratch Shield iPhone case that can extend the life of your precious iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. As described by Nissan, the iPhone case is durable and more rigid that is protected by an outer layer of self-healing paint finish. This self-healing paint technology was initially designed for automotive used and can be seen implemented on its Nissan Murano, 370Z, X-Trail and Infiniti range of products. In their attempt to improve everyday issues, they are now trying to use it to a product that is susceptible to scratches through everyday use – the smartphone.

“We’re really excited about the possibilities provided by this technology. In Japan, we’ve already linked up with world-leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to allow them to use the Scratch Shield technology on its Style Series N-03B mobile phones, and we think this technology has real scope beyond the automotive world. We’re passionate about innovations that get people excited, and that means not being restricted to one industry or genre.” — Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director Business Development for Nissan in Europe

The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case was made from a combination of special plastic (ABS plastic) and an outer paint that is made up of polyrotaxane. The ABS plastic was known as a high grade material that is used in the automotive industry that is known to be more rigid and robust compared to other plastics. On the other hand, the polyrotaxane-based finish provides a durable and long-lasting paint coat that has the ability to ‘heal itself’ quickly from fine scratches. According to Nissan, the chemical structure of the outer paint has the ability to react to revert back to its original shape by filling in the gaps (scratches caused by external forces) thereby ‘healing’ the blemishes.

If the demand for this self-healing iPhone case will increase, Nissan could probably make this great product available later this year. Also, this great innovation from Nissan if combined with Liquipel or WaterBlock technology from HzO could create a better experience for smartphone and tablet users alike. But if you’re on a tight budget and you have to choose between the two, which product would you buy first and why? Please tell us what you think by dropping your comments below.
