You can never really tell if the tracking software you’re using really works. Most of the time we left our precious gadgets unprotected believing that those security apps ‘do not work’. But for some people they opt to install this type of software because for them it’s better to have ‘something’ to hold on to in times of crisis than doing nothing about it. This ‘faith’ in using and installing laptop or phone tracking applications sometimes lead to success stories allowing them to recover their precious laptop or smartphones.

Find My iPhone App
In an incident reported by LA Times, tracking software was used to recover an iPhone from a female victim. After realizing that she had Apples’ Find My iPhone installed, she call the police and notified them about the software. During the search they managed to track the suspect’s location using a borrowed laptop from a complete stranger via the Apple’s website. Luckily the police officers found the suspect and arrest him and charged him with robbery. The LAPD then told the LA Times how crucial it is to have tracking software installed whenever possible:
LAPD officials says computer and phone theft is a major contributor to crime in Los Angeles, and the theft — and its outcome — illustrate the value and benefit of using tracking applications and software for computers, cellphones and portable tablets.
If you own a laptop you can use the free and open source ‘PREY’ tracking software. This is available from the preyproject site that you can also use to recover your lost laptop. This software already proves its claim when a certain info security guy named Greg Martin successfully recovers his laptop from a thief. Read the full story here.
