Micro-SIM was believed to be first seen in the innards of the iPad 1. It measures just like the old SIM in terms of its thickness but smaller in size by almost a half. This reduction in size could bring more extra space for larger batteries, camera lenses or could make smartphones to be thinner. Can you imagine what future smartphones would look like if Micro-SIMs will be made even smaller? I bet you do. A few days ago a German technology has announced a SIM card that is smaller than a Micro-SIM. This ‘micro’ Micro-SIM could open up new possibilities and enhancements to future smartphones making our social life even better.

This ‘micro’ Micro-SIM that is also known as the Nano-SIM is currently the world’s smallest SIM card. As described by G&D (Giesecke & Devrient) in their press release, it was 60% smaller than the regular SIM card and almost 30% smaller than the Micro-SIM. With the reduced in size different smartphone manufacturers can now create thinner devices, additional internal memory or even larger batteries. “The invention of the SIM card remains a milestone in the history of G&D. With the nano-SIM, we have shown how this development can move closer to perfection.” – Axel Deininger, Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division.

Planning on buying the-all-new iPhone 5? Don’t forget to get this great time-saving tool which can easily cut your Standard or Micro SIM into NANO SIM to perfectly fit it into your iPhone 5 This NANO SIM cutter is designed to cut your SIM card the same size as NANO SIM with perfect accuracy….

Previously to have your regular SIM transferred to a Micro-SIM device, you will just use a SIM cutter that can transform your SIM to a Micro-SIM. But with a Nano-SIM device, it’s not possible. The reason is that Nano-SIM was a lot thinner and lesser in depth than the older SIM technology. But if you want to use your Nano-SIM on your regular SIM/Micro SIM equipped smartphone, you can do so by using an ‘adapter solution’ where you can insert your nano-SIM or other manual means to achieve the nano-SIM dimensions.

Your Nano sim can be restored Micro sim or standard sim via nano sim adapter, and then your Nano sim will be match all mobile devices. Nano sim smaller than Micro sim size only 12.3*8.8mm, Nano sim adapter, allow the Nano sim restore Micro sim,Standard sim….

Nano-SIM is expected to be seen in future smartphones that will be release as early as next year. And Apple could be the first company to have this new SIM technology incorporated in their next release of the iPhone device. Could it be the iPhone 5?

Nano-SIM compared to other SIM form factors

Update: Sept. 15 2012 An attempt was made to make a nano-SIM out of a micro-SIM by cutting it to the right proportion and decrease the depth by using a digital caliper and sand paper. Is this possible? I personally believe that it is possible if you will be able to cut the micro-SIM to the correct specifications for a nano-SIM. What do you think?

you can cut it with a SIM cutter and then sand down the plastic with fine sandpaper to make it thinner. I’ve done mine and it works perfectly.

Wow, I didn’t know it will work like that. But does it really work? Can you please send me a video or pictures that will validate you claim?

  • lucas

it works. look at the sim card site on wikipedia. all the important connectors/foil is the exact same size. only the plastic around the chip has been reduced. stop believing these bogus blog reports that they arent compatible. it’s just scare tactics.

This is great. Thanks for the confirmation. If you have a picture or video, please send it to me and I will post it here in my blog for the benefit of all.

I guess lucas and SIMurai is right. I also now believe that it will work by achieving the nano-SIM dimension. See the video in the blog post.
